Confirm Justice Kekere-Ekun As CJN — President Tinubu Urges Senate
President Bola Tinubu has formally written to the Senate, requesting approval for Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).
This request was communicated in a letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during the plenary session on Tuesday.
Justice Kekere-Ekun has been serving in an acting capacity as the CJN since August, following the retirement of Justice Olukayode Ariwoola.
President Tinubu had previously administered the oath of office to her on a temporary basis.
In his letter, President Tinubu cited Section 231(1) of the Nigerian Constitution, which empowers the President to appoint the CJN based on recommendations from the National Judicial Council (NJC), subject to confirmation by the Senate.
President Tinubu expressed confidence in Justice Kekere-Ekun’s capabilities and urged the Senate to expedite the confirmation process.
“I hereby forward the nomination of Honourable Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, CON, for confirmation as the Chief Justice of Nigeria. I trust that this request will receive the Senate’s prompt consideration and approval,” Tinubu stated in his letter.
Senate President Akpabio has referred Justice Kekere-Ekun’s nomination to the Committee of the Whole for further deliberation.
This deliberation is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, where senators will discuss and consider the nomination before making a decision.
