JUST IN: Brazil Declares Nigeria As BRICS Partner Country
The Brazilian government has officially announced Nigeria’s admission as a partner country in the multinational bloc known as BRICS.
This announcement was made by the Brazilian Foreign Ministry on Friday.
Brazil emphasized that both BRICS and Nigeria share common objectives, particularly in their efforts to enhance collaboration among Global South nations and to advocate for the reform of international organizations.
“With the world’s sixth-largest population—and Africa’s largest—as well as being one of the continent’s major economies, Nigeria shares convergent interests with other members of BRICS.
“It plays an active role in strengthening South-South cooperation and in reforming global governance—issues that are top priorities during Brazil’s current presidency,” the statement said.
Currently, Brazil holds the presidency of BRICS for 2025, having assumed this role from Russia on January 1.
With this addition, Nigeria becomes the ninth partner country of BRICS, joining Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan.
This partner country category was established during the 16th BRICS Summit held in Kazan in October 2024.
