House of Reps Speaker, Abbas Tajudeed

In a bold and strategic move, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, has inaugurated a 21-member ad-hoc committee to assume legislative control in Rivers State. The development comes in the wake of an escalating political crisis and the suspension of the state’s House of Assembly.

The event, held in Abuja, was a direct response to a presidential emergency proclamation by President Bola Tinubu. Speaker Abbas emphasized the neutrality expected of the committee members, urging them to prioritize good governance, peace, and the overall welfare of Rivers residents.

“This assignment is purely national. It is not an avenue for political score-settling,” Abbas noted during the ceremony.

The committee, led by Prof. Julius Ihonvbere and supported by Rep. Ali Isah as Deputy Chairman, features cross-regional representation. Among the appointed lawmakers are political heavyweights like Idris Wase and Sada Soli. Notably, the absence of South West nominee James Faleke raised eyebrows but was attributed to unavoidable circumstances.

This legislative intervention marks a rare instance where the federal parliament steps in to restore governance in a state, highlighting the seriousness of the Rivers political impasse.
