Atiku Offers Peter Obi VP Slot in 2027 Coalition with Single-Term Agreement

There are strong indications that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has offered Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, the vice-presidential position in a coalition ticket for the 2027 elections, with a single-term presidency pact.
Sources involved in the coalition talks said that the proposal was first raised during a meeting between Atiku and Obi in the UK earlier this year. Atiku has committed to a single four-year term, with Obi as his running mate.
Obi is reportedly consulting his loyalists before confirming the arrangement. The two previously ran together in 2019 under the PDP but lost to Muhammadu Buhari.
The coalition was announced on March 20, 2025, in Abuja by Atiku, Obi, Nasir El-Rufai, and others, aiming to challenge President Bola Tinubu. However, internal crises within PDP and LP have slowed progress.
A party insider said, “The coalition leaders agree that only a united front involving Atiku and Obi can defeat Tinubu. They are finalizing the single-term deal and preparing to sign an agreement.”
Due to crises in PDP and LP, the coalition is considering the African Democratic Congress as a platform, with some loyalists already engaging with ADC leadership.
Atiku’s media aide, Paul Ibe, declined to confirm details but emphasized the leaders’ focus on building a coalition to unseat APC.
Peter Ahmeh, Obi’s loyalist, avoided commenting on the single-term pact but confirmed Obi’s efforts to resolve LP’s internal issues.
Yunusa Tanko, coordinator of the Obedient Movement, denied knowledge of the coalition deal.
ADC chairman Ralph Nwosu confirmed ongoing talks with stakeholders and promised a major announcement soon.
Within PDP, some members like Diran Odeyemi have urged Atiku to give up his presidential ambitions, calling his persistence a liability.
Anthony Sani of the Arewa Consultative Forum viewed the potential alliance as a logical continuation of their past collaboration and evolving political realities.
This coalition could significantly influence Nigeria’s 2027 elections if finalized.
