Fayemi: Nigeria’s Democratic Journey Incomplete

At a special Channels Television event on June 12, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, former governor of Ekiti State, expressed concern that Nigeria has yet to achieve full democracy, despite the restoration of civilian rule in 1999. Fayemi distinguished between the right to vote and the deeper foundations of democracy.
“We must not confuse elections with democracy. What we achieved in 1999 was the restoration of our voting rights, not complete democracy,” he remarked. Fayemi urged continued efforts to strengthen democratic institutions, building on the work of leaders like President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Reflecting on his activism, Fayemi detailed the perilous operations of Radio Kudirat, a pro-democracy station that challenged the military regime of Sani Abacha. He recalled the constant danger, including smuggling transmitters on international flights.
“It wasn’t that we were fearless; we simply didn’t comprehend the full extent of the risks. I could have been detained and disappeared like many others,” he said. Fayemi referenced testimonies from the Oputa Panel Commission, which revealed plots to eliminate democracy advocates.
He emphasized that the sacrifices of those who fought for democracy should not be minimized, noting that many paid with their lives. Fayemi commended President Tinubu’s recognition of democracy activists but advocated for broader acknowledgment, particularly for Radio Kudirat’s operators.
