David Umahi, Nigeria’s Minister of Works, has defended the recent commissioning of the Eleme section of the East-West Road in Rivers State amid criticism from Ogoni stakeholders. During an inspection on Thursday evening, Umahi clarified that the project is being executed in phases, with phase one—featuring a single carriageway—now complete and operational.

He disclosed that the contract for this section was awarded at N156 billion by the previous administration but remained dormant until President Bola Tinubu took office and authorized immediate commencement of work. Umahi praised the President’s decisive leadership and commitment to infrastructure development in the Niger Delta region.

Responding to comments from Emmanuel Deeyah, President of KAGOTE, a socio-cultural organization representing Khana, Gokana, Tai, and Eleme LGAs, who accused Umahi of misleading the President about the road’s completion, the Minister dismissed these claims, stating, “They must be faceless stakeholders.” He added that even political opponents have acknowledged the road’s progress and urged him to thank the President.

Umahi explained that phase one consists of one full carriageway, while phase two will include the second carriageway, bridges, and flyovers. He acknowledged the presence of some incomplete sections reserved for flyover ramps but assured that contractors will asphalt these areas within seven days to ensure a smooth driving experience from Eleme junction to Onne.

The Minister commended the contractor’s quality and speed, noting that the first carriageway was completed ahead of schedule by April. He also expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming construction of advanced 80-span bridges, which will employ the latest engineering technologies and are expected to be completed within the next three to five months.

Emphasizing the road’s strategic importance, Umahi noted that it connects key national assets and numerous companies in the Niger Delta. He explained that the road’s redesign involved extensive groundwork and reinforced concrete pavement to ensure durability for at least 50 years, a significant upgrade from the previous asphalt design.

Umahi concluded by highlighting the President’s concern over past accidents on the road and his commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of road users.

Before leaving Rivers State, the Minister will visit the Ahoada-Mbiama section of the East-West Road to monitor progress.
