FCCPC Orders Air Peace to Explain Non-Refund of Tickets After Flight Cancellations

Following numerous complaints from passengers about unpaid refunds for cancelled flights, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has summoned Air Peace Limited to appear at its Abuja office on June 23, 2025.
The Commission’s notice, dated June 3, 2025, was disclosed by Ondaje Ijagwu, Director of Corporate Affairs, who said the airline’s refusal to refund ticket fares contravenes Sections 130(1)(a) and (b), and 130(2)(b) of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act 2018.
These laws guarantee consumers the right to timely refunds when services are not provided as agreed.
Air Peace is required to provide a complaint log on refund issues from the last 12 months, records of refunds issued, a list of cancelled flights, and evidence of steps taken to assist affected passengers.
The statement read, “The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission has summoned the management of Air Peace Limited over a deluge of consumer complaints from across the country relating to the non-refund of ticket fares, even in instances where the airline had cancelled its flight operations.”
The Commission warned that failure to comply with the summons could result in fines or imprisonment.
The summons follows a recent dispute involving Senator Adams Oshiomhole, who accused Air Peace officials of extortion after missing a flight. The airline claimed he was late, but the senator alleged that airline staff boarded passengers who arrived later and demanded additional fees to reschedule flights.
Oshiomhole said, “Around 20 to 30 other passengers faced similar treatment, with airline staff allegedly demanding an additional N109,100 to reschedule them to an 8:30 am flight.”
