Tinubu to Hold Crisis Talks as Benue Violence Sparks National Outcry

President Bola Tinubu will meet with Benue State stakeholders today in a bid to stem the violence that has devastated communities and claimed over 200 lives in Yelewata. The attackers, using advanced firearms and incendiaries, left a scene of devastation, drawing condemnation from both local and international quarters.
The Benue State House of Assembly, in a pointed resolution, criticized the governor, his deputy, and all lawmakers for failing the people. Opposition parties have called for a state of emergency, while others accuse the President of putting politics ahead of public safety and demand urgent security reforms.
The United Nations has condemned the attacks and called for a thorough investigation. Governor Alia, via his information commissioner, maintained that his government has supported security agencies and fulfilled its duties.
Security chiefs, including the Chief of Defence Staff and Inspector-General of Police, visited the affected areas to lead operations. The President’s adviser confirmed that Tinubu would meet with a wide range of stakeholders, from traditional leaders to youth groups, to find lasting solutions.
Senator George Akume convened a stakeholder meeting, with retired generals and politicians expressing determination to end the violence. Lawmakers in Benue admitted their own failures and called for stronger enforcement of anti-open grazing laws and a period of mourning for the victims.
Preparations for the President’s visit include road repairs and heightened security. Political leaders remain divided, with some calling for emergency rule and others advocating increased security presence.
Military commanders have been ordered to collaborate more closely with local communities, and the United Nations has called for justice for the victims of the attacks.
