Sergio Busquets Sets To Hang Boot, Announces Retirement Date
Inter Miami’s midfielder and former Barcelona and Spain legend, Sergio Busquets, announced on Thursday that he will hang up his boots at the end of the 2025 Major League Soccer season.
The 37-year-old revealed his decision in a social media statement.
“These will be my last months on the pitch. I’m retiring very happy, proud, fulfilled, and above all grateful,” Busquets said in a video on his Instagram page.
“A heartfelt thank you to everyone and to football for everything. You will always be a part of this beautiful story.”
Renowned for his elegance, vision, and composure, Busquets is celebrated as one of the finest defensive midfielders in football history.
During his illustrious spell at Barcelona, he played a central role in nine La Liga triumphs and lifted the Champions League trophy three times.
On the international stage, he earned 143 caps for Spain, helping his country secure the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the 2012 UEFA European Championship.
Busquets stepped away from international duty after the 2022 World Cup before moving to the United States in 2023, where he reunited with longtime teammate Lionel Messi at Inter Miami.
Ahead of his retirement, Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso, his former Spain midfield partner—paid tribute to Busquets’ remarkable career.
“He wasn’t the fastest but he was the quickest mentally, always a step ahead so he could make the right decisions,” Alonso told reporters on Friday.
“That’s why he had such a brilliant career and we all speak very fondly of Busi.”
