WhatsApp Sets For Major Upgrade — Here’s What The New ‘Username’ Update Means
WhatsApp is reportedly testing a major update that may allow users to connect without revealing their phone numbers.
Instead, users will be able to create unique usernames much like on Instagram, Telegram, or X — in what could become one of the most significant privacy upgrades in the app’s history.
The feature, discovered in WhatsApp’s beta testing program, would enable people to chat and join groups using usernames rather than phone numbers.
This move is designed to enhance privacy and control, particularly in large group chats or business conversations where sharing personal numbers can feel invasive.
Leaked screenshots reveal a new “Username” option in user profiles, allowing people to choose custom handles and keep their numbers hidden if desired.
However, while the change could make WhatsApp feel more like a social media platform, it also raises potential issues around username squatting and impersonation.
The username feature remains in testing, but if rolled out successfully, it could redefine how over two billion people connect — shifting WhatsApp’s focus from phone numbers to personalized usernames.
