Tinubu Decorates Newly Appointed Service Chiefs In Abuja

President Bola Tinubu, on Thursday, decorated the newly appointed service chiefs with their new ranks at a brief ceremony held inside the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Those decorated include the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede; Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Wahidi Shaibu; Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas; and Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Kelvin Aneke.

Also decorated was the Chief of Defence Intelligence, Lieutenant General Emmanuel Undiendeye, who retained his position but was elevated from the rank of Major General.

The ceremony, which lasted less than an hour, was attended by top government officials, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, Deputy Senate President Jubril Barau, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, and Chief of Staff to the President Femi Gbajabiamila, among others.

Wives of the service chiefs were also present to assist in the decoration of their husbands.

President Tinubu had appointed the new military heads in October 2025, following the retirement of their predecessors.

The nominees were screened and confirmed by the Senate on Wednesday, after a closed-door session that lasted about two hours.

During the screening, senators questioned the nominees on their strategies to strengthen national security and reform the armed forces.

After the exercise, Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced their confirmation through a unanimous voice vote, commending President Tinubu for his choices and expressing confidence in the ability of the new service chiefs to reposition the Nigerian military.
