Official rate: The benchmark figure of about ₦2,065.96 per pound represents the conversion value tracked by formal financial platforms and banks.

Parallel market rate: Bureau de Change (BDC) operators and street traders reported buying and selling between ₦2,000 and ₦2,100 per pound — underscoring the gap between official and informal exchange rates.

Why the Rates Differ:

According to reports gathered, the persistent disparity between both markets is influenced by:

High demand for pounds linked to foreign education, travel, and imports, Limited foreign currency supply, and Fluctuating remittance and investment inflows.

As a result, individuals and businesses using informal channels often pay a premium for the same amount of foreign currency.

Impact on Consumers and Importers:

At the official rate of ₦2,065.96, purchasing £100 would cost about ₦206,596.

However, on the black market at ₦2,100 per pound, the same £100 rises to roughly ₦210,000.

To reduce costs, consumers are advised to transact through authorised banks or licensed FX dealers, and verify rates and seller credibility when using parallel markets.

Market Outlook:
