Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala Has Been Confirmed As The WTO Director-General.
OnyxNews Nigeria recalls that in October 2020, Dr Okonjo-Iweala was nominated as the final candidate for the WTO. She polled 104 votes from 164 member countries to defeat her opponent, the South Korea’s trade minister at the final stage of the race. Though, was rejected by US administration under immediate past President, Donald Trump.
Few days ago, current United States President, Joe Biden approved Okonjo-Iweala as WTO DG.
The WTO confirmed the former Nigerian Minister of Finance’s appointment at a special meeting of the General Council, following a selection process that included eight candidates from around the world.
“Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala from Nigeria is appointed as the next WTO Director-General.
“Her term starts on the 1st of March 2021,” WTO wrote on Twitter.

Dr. Okonjo-Iweala becomes the first female and the first African to head the WTO.
