Tension In Aso Rock Villa As Military Speaks On Taking Over Power From President Buhari

The military has reacted to calls to stage a coup and destabilize the Buhari government.
OnyxNews Nigeria reports that, the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) said in a statement issued by its spokesperson, Onyema Nwachukwu, that its attention had been drawn to comments made by Robert Clarke, a senior lawyer, who called for power to be handed over to the military.
The military distanced itself from the comment, calling it “anti-democratic,” and stating that it remains committed to the current administration.
According to the statement, “the military high command has been drawn to a statement purportedly made by one Robert Clark SAN, implying that current political leadership should hand over control to the military for the purpose of restructuring.”

“The Nigerian Military wishes to distance itself from anti-democratic statements and positions. Let me state unequivocally that the Nigerian Armed Forces are completely committed to the current administration and all related democratic institutions.
“We will remain apolitical, obedient to the Civil Authority, and steadfastly loyal to President Muhammadu Buhari, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and the 1999 Constitution as amended.
“We will continue to carry out our constitutional duties professionally, especially in terms of safeguarding the country’s independence, defending the country’s territorial integrity, and protecting citizens’ lives and property.” The DHQ cautioned lawmakers and military forces against considering a coup, stating that anyone caught doing so would face the full force of the law.

“The Military High Command wishes to take this opportunity to alert misguided politicians who harbor irrational ambitions to rule this country outside of the electoral process to put such thoughts to rest, as the military under the current leadership remains steadfast in defending Nigeria’s democracy and growth,” it said.
“We also want to warn all military personnel that even considering this illegality is treasonous. Any employees found to have colluded with those with such an agenda would face the full force of the law. The latest threats to security are not insurmountable.
