Osimhen, Oshoala Shortlisted For CAF Player Of The Year Award
Victor Osimhen and Asisat Oshoala, both from Nigeria, have been selected as finalists for the CAF Player of the Year award in their respective categories.
Osimhen had an impressive performance as the top scorer in the 2023 African Cup of Nations qualifiers.
He will be competing against other notable players such as Mohammed Salah from Egypt, Achraf Hakimi from Morocco, and Riyad Mahrez from Algeria for the prestigious award.
Osimhen’s contributions were not limited to international competitions. He played a significant role in Napoli’s success in the Scudetto last season, where he emerged as the top goal scorer with 26 goals. This achievement earned him the Golden Boot.
On the other hand, Oshoala, who is the reigning African women’s player of the year, has also earned her place as a finalist. She will be vying for the award against Thembi Klagtlana from South Africa and Barbara Banda from Zambia.
Oshoala had an outstanding season with FC Barcelona, scoring 21 goals in just 28 games. Her performance helped lead her team to win the 2022/23 Spanish League title, where she was also the top scorer for the club with 27 goals across all competitions.
Moreover, Oshoala played a crucial role in Barcelona’s successful defense of their domestic title and their victory in the UEFA Women’s Champions League.
Oshoala’s impact extends beyond club competition. She made history during the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand by becoming the first Nigerian and first female African player to score in three different editions of the tournament.
The grand award ceremony will be held on 11 December 2023 in Marrakech, Morocco, where the winners will be announced and celebrated.
