Enugu Assembly Passes N521.5bn 2024 Budget Into Law
The Enugu State House of Assembly unanimously passed the 2024 Appropriation bill estimate into law on Thursday.
The budget, totaling N521,561,386,000, was meticulously reviewed by the House Committee on Appropriation, who found it to be flawless and recommended its acceptance.
The committee chairman, Hon. Anthony Nwankwo, presented the report to the House and urged the parliament to pass it into law.
The members of the House showed their support for the budget, commending Governor Peter Mbah for his leadership in introducing a significant change in the distribution of funds between recurrent and capital expenditures.
They noted that historically, the budget allocation had favored recurrent expenses, which hindered infrastructural development.
However, this budget allocates N414,334,120,000, representing over 79 percent of the total budget, to capital expenditures, indicating a paradigm shift towards promoting infrastructural growth.
The Speaker of the House, Hon. Uchenna Ugwu, emphasized that passing the bill into law was not the end of their responsibilities. The House would diligently conduct thorough oversight to ensure that the law is fully implemented for the benefit of the masses.
This would guarantee that the allocated funds are utilized efficiently and effectively to deliver the anticipated growth and development to the people of Enugu State.
He said: “Today, members of the state House of Assembly performed their constitutional duty and have just passed this ‘Budget of Disruptive Economic Growth’ into law. It is now a working document for the executive arm of this government.
“The budget that has about 79 per cent capital expenditure and 21 per cent recurrent expenditure, with each sector of the economy like agriculture, education and the health sectors taking large portions of the funds, is capable of delivering prosperity to the people of Enugu State.
“I, therefore, enjoin the executive to try very hard to implement the content of their document. And I want to assure the people of this state that this House of Assembly is going to take our oversight functions very seriously.
“It is not going to be business as usual. We are going to ensure that every fund we have appropriated is put to judicious use.
“Let me also take this opportunity to thank our dear governor, Peter Mbah, for giving a lifeline to the economy of this state.”
Governor Mbah presented the budget estimate of N521.5 billion on December 5, making it the highest budget in the state’s history.
The House of Assembly pledged to expedite the consideration process in order to serve the people of the state and promote progress and prosperity in Enugu.
