Cristiano Ronaldo Ends 2023 As World’s Top Goalscorer
Al Nassr striker Cristiano Ronaldo has once again secured his position as the top scorer of 2023, expressing his determination to “try and do it again.”
Ronaldo scored his 54th goal of the year during a match against Al Taawoun in the Saudi Pro League, helping his team secure a 4-1 victory.
It is worth noting that all of his 54 goals were scored for both his club and country across 59 matches.
With this achievement, Ronaldo has surpassed the goal tally of other prominent players such as Harry Kane from Bayern Munich, Kylian Mbappé from Paris Saint-Germain, and Erling Haaland from Manchester City.
It is important to mention that none of these contenders will have the opportunity to add more goals in 2023.
This impressive accomplishment marks the fifth time that Cristiano Ronaldo claims the title of the world’s top scorer at the end of the year.
He previously achieved this feat in 2011, 2013, 2014, and 2015 during his time at Real Madrid.
“It was a good year for me,” he said on EuroFoot.
Cristiano Ronaldo added, “I scored many goals and helped the team a lot (at Al Nassr and the national team), so I’m really proud. Next year, I’ll try to do it again.”
Ronaldo has recently reached a significant milestone in his career, playing his 1,200th professional match. During this match, he scored one goal and assisted another while representing Al-Nassr.
The 38-year-old tapped in a cross from Sadio Mane and later set up his teammate Otavio in a 4-1 victory over Al-Riyadh.
Expressing gratitude to all those who have supported him throughout his career, Ronaldo made it clear that he is not finished yet.
In addition to his club achievements, Ronaldo has also made his mark on the international stage.
In February 2020, he scored a goal for Juventus in Serie A to mark his 1,000th senior appearance.
Furthermore, he became the first men’s player to reach 200 international appearances in June when he played for Portugal against Iceland.
With an astounding 128 goals, Ronaldo is also the leading goal scorer in international matches.
Looking at his club career, Ronaldo holds several appearance records.
He has made the most appearances in the history of the UEFA Champions League, having played 183 matches for Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Juventus in the competition.
Additionally, in December 2021, Ronaldo became the first player ever to score 800 top-level career goals.
He has since surpassed the 850-goal mark, solidifying his status as one of the greatest goal scorers in football history.
