De Rossi Appointed As Roma’s New Manager
Serie A club Roma announced on Tuesday that Daniele De Rossi, despite his limited coaching experience, has been appointed as the new coach following the sacking of Jose Mourinho.
“AS Roma are pleased to confirm that Daniele De Rossi has been appointed as head coach until 30 June 2024,” said Roma in a statement.
The 40-year-old former Italy midfielder, who spent the majority of his playing career with Roma, returns to his hometown club.
De Rossi’s appointment comes shortly after Mourinho’s sudden dismissal, which was prompted by a disappointing third season for Roma.
While De Rossi achieved success on the international stage by winning the World Cup with Italy in 2006, his trophy collection at Roma was more modest, consisting of two Italian Cups and the 2007 Italian Super Cup.
Having ended his playing career at Boca Juniors in early 2020, De Rossi’s coaching resume is limited, having only held a four-month position at SPAL last season before the team was relegated.
Currently, Roma sits in ninth place in Serie A, trailing the Champions League positions by five points, following a 3-1 loss to AC Milan.
