BREAKING: US House Bans TikTok
The US House of Representatives overwhelmingly voted to approve a bill on Wednesday that would compel TikTok to divest from its Chinese owner or face a ban in the United States.
This decision, backed by 352 legislators in favor and 65 against, showcases a rare display of unity across party lines in a politically polarized environment.
House Majority Leader Steve Scalise praised the passing of the bill, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding user data from potential risks posed by the popular app.
He reassured that targeting TikTok would not adversely affect Republicans in the upcoming elections, highlighting the need to provide additional layers of protection for the younger demographic who may be unaware of the vulnerabilities associated with the platform.
“This bill protects those families and young people and lets them still use the application they enjoy. So it’s a win for families across America, and it’s a long time coming,” he continued
Scalise expressed confidence in the strong bipartisan support within the House, anticipating a smoother path for the bill in the Senate.
However, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has yet to confirm whether the Senate will consider the House’s version of the legislation.
“I’ve talked to several senators; they are looking—many of them are looking towards how strong this vote is. So the fact that it’s such an overwhelming vote, both Republicans and Democrats, bodes well for this version of the bill to be quickly taken up in the Senate,” Scalise said.
In response, the Chinese government issued a statement cautioning the US about the repercussions of banning TikTok, suggesting that such actions could have consequences in the future.
The outcome of this legislative move could have far-reaching implications, both in terms of data security and international relations.
