Ex-Brazil Star Robinho Handed Nine-year Rape Sentence
A court in Brazil has ruled that former Manchester City and Real Madrid forward Robinho, aged 40, must serve a nine-year rape sentence in his home country.
This decision comes after an Italian court found him guilty in 2017 of participating in the 2013 gang rape of a 22-year-old Albanian woman.
Despite living in Brazil, which does not extradite its citizens, judges in Brasilia have decided that he should fulfill his sentence in Brazil following a request from Italy.
Robinho will remain free while awaiting a potential appeal against the ruling, as confirmed by his lawyers.
The ex-Brazil international, with 100 national team caps, was with AC Milan at the time of the incident.
His previous appeal in 2020 was unsuccessful before Italy’s highest court upheld his sentence in 2022, leading to Italian prosecutors issuing an international arrest warrant.
In a recent statement to a Brazilian network, the footballer claimed the sexual encounter was “Consensual“.
