Electricity Tariff: Refund Overcharged Customers, April 11— NERC Instructs Discos
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has instructed eleven electricity distribution companies (Discos) to reimburse customers who were incorrectly billed at the revised rate by April 11, 2024.
This directive, as outlined in a statement signed by Mr. Abba Terab, the DGM of Market Competition and Rates at the commission and released in Lagos on Saturday, specifies that the refunds must be facilitated through energy tokens, with evidence of compliance to be submitted by April 12.
In addition to the reimbursement process, NERC has mandated the Discos to take several measures to resolve the issue effectively.
These measures include maintaining only the newly approved Band A feeders listed in their April 2024 supplementary orders for vending to prepaid customers and billing for postpaid customers.
Furthermore, the Discos are required to publish on their websites the schedule of approved Band A feeders affected by the rate review, ensuring transparency and clarity for affected customers.
To provide further assistance to customers, the Discos must establish a portal on their websites by April 10, 2024, which will enable customers to check their current Bands using their meter or account numbers.
Additionally, the Discos are expected to complete the refund process for incorrectly billed customers by April 11, 2024, and submit evidence of compliance by April 12, 2024.
NERC has highlighted its dedication to overseeing compliance with these directives and offering support to stakeholders as necessary to ensure a smooth and fair resolution of the billing discrepancies.
