JUST IN: Putin And Kim Jong Un Hold Talks On Weapons Deal
Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un have officially signed a significant “strategic partnership treaty” during their recent meeting in Pyongyang, as reported by Russian state media.
Putin had indicated beforehand that a comprehensive document had been prepared, one that will set the foundation for their future relations.
“Russia and North Korea have signed a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty,” the RIA Novosti news agency reported, citing a correspondent.
However, specific details regarding the content of the treaty were not disclosed.
In addition to the diplomatic discussions, the two leaders also participated in a customary gift exchange.
Kim Jong Un received a tea set and a high-end Russian-made Aurus car, according to Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov.
Although Ushakov did not reveal the nature of the gifts presented to Putin, he hinted that they were likely connected to Putin’s persona, potentially including sculptures or busts.
The new treaty is expected to supersede previous bilateral agreements and declarations signed between the two countries in 1961, 2000, and 2001, marking a notable milestone in their evolving relationship.
The deepening ties between Moscow and Pyongyang have raised concerns in Western nations, with suspicions that Russia may be obtaining and utilizing North Korean military equipment in relation to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Kim Jong Un expressed that the ongoing diplomatic efforts have elevated relations with Russia to a new level, emphasizing the significance of Putin’s visit in further solidifying the strong bond and “ardent friendship” between their respective nations.
