Cholera Outbreak: NCDC Sets To Establish National Emergency Operations Centre
Following the recent cholera outbreak that has unfortunately resulted in 53 fatalities across 31 states in Nigeria, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has taken proactive measures by activating its National Cholera Emergency Operations Centre (EOC).
In response to a critical assessment of the cholera epidemiological situation in the country, which indicated a significant risk of heightened cholera transmission, the NCDC swiftly mobilized its National Cholera Emergency Operations Centre.
The report said, “As of June 24, 2024, a total of 1,528 suspected cases and 53 deaths have been recorded across 31 states.
“Following a dynamic risk assessment of the cholera epidemiological situation that placed the country at a very high risk of increased cholera transmission, the NCDC took this step to coordinate the response to the outbreak, saying that as of June 24, 2024, a total of 1,528 suspected cases have been reported.”
As part of the emergency response efforts, the NCDC reported that in Ogun state alone, there has been one fatality and 25 confirmed cases, out of 35 suspected cases.
The state government has taken steps to address the situation by distributing cholera test kits and treatment supplies to all local government areas and designated treatment facilities, where treatment is provided free of charge at government health centers.
Collaboration between the NCDC and various state authorities is crucial in containing the outbreak and curbing further transmission.
By working in tandem with local governments and health facilities, the NCDC aims to effectively manage the current outbreak and prevent its escalation to other regions.
