BREAKING: Thomas Tuchel Appointed As England’s New Manager
Thomas Tuchel was officially announced as the new manager of the England national football team, with his tenure set to commence on January 1, 2025.
The 51-year-old German coach, who most recently managed Bayern Munich, will be taking over from Gareth Southgate.
“I am very proud to have been given the honour of leading the England team,” Tuchel said in a FA statement.
“I have long felt a personal connection to the game in this country, and it has given me some incredible moments already. To have the chance to represent England is a huge privilege, and the opportunity to work with this special and talented group of players is very exciting.”
Tuchel’s impressive track record, having coached esteemed clubs such as Chelsea, Borussia Dortmund, and Paris Saint-Germain, makes him a desirable choice for the role, as the Football Association (FA) aims to bring home a major tournament win for England, a feat that has been elusive for over five decades.
Tuchel’s appointment has, however, faced criticism for overlooking English talent in favor of a foreign coach.
Despite this, Tuchel brings a wealth of experience and a history of success, having clinched league titles and domestic cups in various countries.
Notably, his crowning achievement was leading Chelsea to Champions League victory in 2021, swiftly followed by triumphs in the UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup during his time with the London club.
Alongside Tuchel, English coach Anthony Barry, who previously collaborated with him at Bayern Munich, has been enlisted to provide support and local expertise.
“We are thrilled to have hired Thomas Tuchel, one of the best coaches in the world,” said FA CEO Mark Bullingham.
“Since Gareth resigned, we have worked through the candidate pool, meeting a number of coaches and evaluating them against that criteria.
“Thomas was very impressive and stood out with his vast expertise and his drive.”
Taking the helm from Southgate, who guided the team to several impressive tournament finishes, Tuchel is tasked with guiding England’s talented roster, which includes notable players like Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, and Cole Palmer, towards success in the upcoming 2026 World Cup, where they are expected to be strong contenders.
Despite the promising prospects and roster at his disposal, Tuchel faces the weight of expectations as he endeavors to lead England to international glory, a feat that has eluded the nation since their historic 1966 World Cup victory.
