Market Traders Storm Lagos Assembly, Demand Halt to Demolition

Published

on

Hundreds of shop owners and market leaders from Owode Onirin Motor Spare Parts Market protested at the Lagos State House of Assembly, demanding an immediate halt to the demolition of their market. They carried placards expressing their grievances, including the lack of prior notice and the devastating impact on their livelihoods.

The protest followed a demolition carried out by government officials around 4:00 a.m. on March 6, 2025, which affected over 500 shops and resulted in significant losses. Market President General, Abiodun Ahmed, condemned the action, stating they received no warning and that the demolition had led to fatalities and hospitalizations.

Market executives described the demolition as catastrophic, impacting 41,000 traders and destroying shops, mosques, and other structures. They appealed to the governor and speaker for assistance, fearing the loss of their livelihoods would force them into desperate measures.

Protesters highlighted the market’s long-standing existence, attracting traders from across Nigeria and internationally. They also reported looting following the demolition.

Adebola Shabi, representing Lagos Mainland Constituency II, assured the protesters that the House of Assembly would investigate the matter and provide a swift resolution.

The protest echoes similar concerns raised by traders at the Police Officers’ Wives Association Shopping Complex in Computer Village, Ikeja, who also experienced a late-night demolition without prior notice.
