The Real Reason Why Police Withdrew Sanusi’s Invite Over Sallah Incident

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has rescinded its invitation to the 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, concerning the violent events that unfolded in Kano State during the Sallah celebration on March 30, 2025. Sources indicate the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) ordered the withdrawal after receiving counsel from influential stakeholders and prioritizing the need to ensure police actions are perceived as impartial and not influenced by political considerations.
It was gathered that the IGP’s decision reflects a commitment to depoliticize policing, leading to the directive that instead of summoning the former Emir, operatives from the Force Intelligence Department (FID) will travel to Kano to record his account of the incident.
Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, previously stated that intelligence reports prior to Sallah indicated plans for separate Durbar festivals by the two contending Emirs in Kano, Alh Aminu Ado Bayero and Sanusi II. The Durbar is a traditional horse-riding procession led by the Emir and his entourage.
To prevent potential conflict, the IGP had deployed Deputy Inspector-General of Police Abubakar Sadiq to mediate discussions with both Emirs and the Kano State Government. An agreement was reached to suspend all Durbar activities and any horse-riding by the Emirs on Sallah Day to maintain peace and public order.
However, despite this agreement, Sanusi II, who arrived at the Eid prayers by car, proceeded to mount a horse and lead a procession accompanied by local vigilantes following the prayers. This action reportedly sparked a confrontation with community youths, tragically resulting in the death of one Usman Sagiru and injuries to several others – a scenario the Police had foreseen and attempted to prevent. The decision to now have the FID obtain Sanusi’s statement in Kano underscores the Force’s attempt to navigate the politically charged situation surrounding the Sallah incident and its aftermath.
