Fake News of Jail Break in Owerri Debunked by Prison Authorities

A disturbing report circulating on Facebook claiming a prison break at the Owerri Custodial Centre, orchestrated by around 50 armed Fulani herdsmen who supposedly freed 70 of their members detained for killing local farmers, has been strongly refuted by the Imo State Custodial Centre management. The Public Relations Officer, CSC Goodluck Uboegbulam, issued a statement on Thursday in Owerri, labeling the report as entirely fake and unfounded.
According to the false online account, the Owerri Custodial Centre was completely emptied following the alleged attack. However, the reality on the ground paints a starkly different picture. The prison authorities have assured the public that the facility is secure and calm, with all officers on red alert.
Supporting the official denial is the continuous security presence at the facility, including a stationed army armored tank and other security operatives. Moreover, the road leading to the center remains closed to traffic since a previous attack in April 2021, and normal activities continue in the surrounding Owerri metropolis, directly contradicting the claims of a recent jail break and escape.
