Mile 12, Ketu, and Others Pay Price for Filth as Lagos Orders Market Shutdown

Thirteen markets in Lagos State, notably those in the Mile 12 and Ketu vicinities, have been closed indefinitely by the government due to severe and ongoing issues with waste management. The enforcement, which began on Thursday night, targets markets that have repeatedly flouted the state’s environmental laws.

Among the affected commercial hubs are the Erukan Market in Mile 12 and the Oja Oba Market in Ketu. The Lagos State Government cited consistent evidence of improper waste disposal, including the dumping of refuse on public roadways, as the primary reason for the drastic measure, referencing the 2017 Environmental Management and Protection Law.

The state has made it clear that the priority is to improve sanitation and public health within these densely populated areas. Market operators are now under pressure to implement effective waste management solutions to pave the way for potential reopening and prevent future closures.
