Oyo State Awards N3.5bn Contracts to Revamp Three Rural Markets

In a bid to modernize rural agricultural markets, Oyo State’s Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project (OY-RAAMP) has awarded contracts totaling N3.5 billion for the physical improvement of three rural markets across the state.
The markets selected for this first phase are Aare-Alasa Market in Ona-Ara LGA, Oja-Agbe Market in Iseyin LGA, and Oja-Oba Market in Ibarapa Central LGA.
Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Olasunkanmi Olaleye, disclosed the development in a statement issued by the state’s Commissioner for Information, Dotun Oyelade. He reiterated the government’s dedication to upgrading rural markets to become modern centers that will enhance agricultural productivity and ease market access.
“These markets will undergo comprehensive modernization, including upgraded infrastructure, enhanced storage facilities, improved access roads, and other critical features aimed at streamlining agricultural logistics and supporting both farmers and traders,” Olaleye said.
The Permanent Secretary, Abosede Owoeye, described the contract signing as a major step toward agricultural transformation, aligning with Governor Seyi Makinde’s vision for food security and economic empowerment in rural communities.
OY-RAAMP Coordinator, Adeola Ekundayo, broke down the allocation: N1.23 billion for Aare Alasa, N1.22 billion for Oja-Agbe, and N1.04 billion for Oja-Oba markets. She highlighted that the project’s agro-logistics component aims to reduce post-harvest losses and improve rural road connectivity.
Contractors awarded the projects are Quicbond Nigeria Ltd, Lee Fakino Nigeria Ltd, and AB-Bond Habitat Ltd respectively. Ekundayo urged close collaboration with host communities to ensure the success and sustainability of the projects.
This effort is part of broader rural development programs supported by the state government and development partners to boost agricultural marketing and rural access.
