Atiku, Obi Camps Agree on ADC as Coalition Platform to Challenge Tinubu in 2027
The political camps of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, alongside former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai and other leaders, have agreed to adopt the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as their main coalition platform for the 2027 presidential election.
According to multiple sources close to the coalition talks, a meeting held on Tuesday night resulted in the decision to use the ADC as the primary party for opposition forces aiming to unseat President Bola Tinubu.
Efforts to restructure the ADC, including changes to its national leadership and Board of Trustees, are reportedly underway, with official announcements expected soon.
El-Rufai confirmed the meeting and said the coalition’s objective is to “ensure that President Tinubu returns to Lagos in 2027,” signaling a strong opposition drive.
ADC National Chairman Ralph Nwosu confirmed ongoing coalition discussions involving Atiku, Obi, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, and others. “We believe that if all of them work together, we can deliver this country,” Nwosu said.
The APC, however, remains confident in Tinubu’s chances. APC National Secretary Ajibola Basiru described Tinubu as “the grandmaster of coalitions” and predicted that the opposition coalition would fail in 2027.
While some coalition leaders are members of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), they plan to form an alliance involving ADC, SDP, and other political platforms.
Atiku’s media aide Paul Ibe and Obi’s coalition secretary Peter Ahmeh confirmed their leaders’ commitment to the coalition but did not provide details on the recent meeting.
The Coalition for United Political Parties (CUPP) spokesperson Mark Adebayo said Nigerians will soon be informed about the coalition’s progress.
Former SGF Babachir Lawal revealed that the coalition leaders have ruled out the PDP due to internal challenges, calling it “an incurable virus.”
The coalition is gearing up for a united front against the APC in 2027.
