In a devastating event on Friday, a female student of Seico Secondary School, Ikangba, Ijebu Ode, was killed when a truck lost control and rammed into students returning from their West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). Another student was critically injured in the accident.

The crash took place along the newly rehabilitated Ikangba/Agoro Road. According to Mr. Eko Nicholas, a local resident and chairman of the Campaign for Democratic and Workers Rights in Ogun State, the truck was traveling from the Molipa end when it suddenly veered off its lane and struck the students before crashing into the fence of a Redeemed Christian Church of God.

“Nobody knew what actually made the truck coming from Molipa end of the road to veer off and ram into the students coming from the opposite direction and crashing into the fence of a Redeemed church beside the road,” Nicholas said.

He confirmed the victims were WASSCE candidates, noting, “One of the students, a female, died on the spot while another female was also critically injured. We are all praying she make it.”

Nicholas criticized the government for failing to install speed breakers or other traffic calming measures on the road since its rehabilitation, which he believes has contributed to multiple accidents. “This is yet another needless death on the Ikangba/Agoro road, bringing the number of souls lost from February to six,” he said.

The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency’s spokesperson, Babatunde Akinbiyi, confirmed the fatality, stating, “One school pupil died.”
