President Tinubu Engages Suspended Rivers Governor Fubara in Lagos to Resolve Political Crisis

Published

on

President Bola Tinubu convened a crucial meeting on June 3, 2025, with suspended Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara at his private Lagos residence. This closed-door meeting is the first since the president declared a state of emergency in Rivers State on March 18, 2025, suspending Fubara and dissolving the state government due to worsening insecurity and political turmoil.

Following the emergency declaration, retired Vice Admiral Ibok Ete Ibas was appointed sole administrator for six months. The decision sparked controversy and legal challenges by opposition governors, but was endorsed by the National Assembly.

Fubara, who recently endorsed the emergency rule as “the right call at the right time,” assured residents that the suspension “will soon be lifted” and expressed hope of resuming office. Sources close to the presidency reveal the meeting aimed to ease tensions and discuss terms for Fubara’s return, with speculation about a shift from PDP to APC.

The political rivalry between Fubara and former ally Nyesom Wike, now Federal Capital Territory Minister, remains a key factor. While Fubara claims reconciliation, Wike denies involvement in the emergency rule decision and opposes it. Both seek to gain President Tinubu’s favor as the political future of Rivers State hangs in the balance.
