June 12: Nigeria’s Democracy a Stabilising Force in West Africa, Minister Affirms

As Nigeria commemorated Democracy Day, Foreign Affairs Minister Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar underscored the country’s role as a stabilising force in West Africa. In a statement released by his spokesperson, Alkasim Abdulkadir, Tuggar highlighted Nigeria’s steadfast adherence to democratic norms amid widespread regional instability.
Tuggar pointed out that Nigeria’s record of regular elections, peaceful power transitions, and respect for constitutional order has distinguished it as a model for neighbouring countries. “Nigeria stands as a beacon of hope and stability in the region,” he said, acknowledging that while democratic institutions may have flaws, their resilience is undeniable.
The minister credited Nigeria’s commitment to electoral accountability, civic engagement, and the rule of law for maintaining both internal stability and the country’s standing as a dependable democratic partner. “In a time when democracy is under assault in parts of West Africa, Nigeria has continued to demonstrate that the rule of law, electoral accountability, and civic participation are essential pillars for long-term peace and development,” Tuggar stated.
He referenced the ongoing challenges faced by ECOWAS in countries like Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea, and Niger, where military coups have disrupted democratic governance. Tuggar reaffirmed Nigeria’s support for diplomatic efforts to restore civilian rule, insisting that democracy must remain central to regional conflict resolution.
Drawing on Nigeria’s history of peacekeeping and leadership within ECOWAS, Tuggar emphasised that the nation’s political stability has a ripple effect throughout West Africa. He maintained that democratic governance is not just a domestic matter but a vital component of regional peace. “Democracy is not just an internal affair,” he said. “It is our strategic contribution to regional peace. Our progress strengthens the African democratic project as a whole.”
Tuggar concluded by commending President Bola Tinubu’s leadership in guiding Nigeria toward economic recovery and political consolidation, expressing optimism about the country’s future.
