Obidient Movement Criticizes Tinubu’s ‘Opposition in Disarray’ Remark as Threat to Democracy

The Obidient Movement has publicly rebuked President Bola Tinubu for his recent comments about the opposition being in disarray, calling the remarks undemocratic and dangerous for Nigeria’s democratic process. The movement, aligned with Peter Obi, condemned the president’s declaration during Democracy Day celebrations that he takes pleasure in the opposition’s internal crises and will not intervene to help them.
Tinubu’s exact words were, “For me, I would say try your best to put your house in order. I will not help you do so. It is, indeed, a pleasure to witness you in such disarray,” delivered before a joint session of the National Assembly in Abuja.
Dr. Yunusa Tanko, the Obidient Movement’s National Coordinator, described the statement as a public endorsement of political sabotage and a threat to democratic norms. He said, “This confirms what Peter Obi has consistently warned about, that the current administration is actively working against the rule of law and democratic ideals.”
Tanko also criticized the president’s Democracy Day symbolic acts, such as pardoning the Ogoni Nine posthumously and awarding national honours, labeling them as political stunts meant to distract from Nigeria’s worsening economic conditions and insecurity. He urged global democratic nations to pay attention, warning that Nigeria’s democratic decline could have ripple effects across Africa.
