Benue Killings Spark Outcry from Nigerian Doctors

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has condemned the recent massacre in Benue State’s Guma Local Government Area, where suspected herders killed more than 200 people in Yelwata and Daudu communities. In a statement by NARD President Dr. Tope Osundara, the association expressed deep concern about the toll the violence is taking on the already overstretched healthcare system in the state.

Dr. Osundara emphasized that the violence has directly affected health workers, some of whom were victims themselves. “The mounting death toll is a potential for humanitarian crisis and epidemics which will overwhelm the ability of health workers to cope,” he said, adding that government protection for life and property appears insufficient.

The association mourned the death of pharmacist Matthew Lormba, calling it a stark reminder that healthcare providers are increasingly endangered. The violence has heightened security fears among doctors, causing absenteeism and limiting access to primary healthcare in vulnerable communities.

The psychological burden on medical staff is also alarming, with burnout and mental health challenges impeding care delivery. Dr. Osundara noted the broader consequences for agriculture and food security, warning that attacks on farming communities threaten food production and increase malnutrition risks for children.

NARD condemned ongoing violence in other conflict-prone states, highlighting over 10,000 deaths nationwide in two years, widespread displacement, and disrupted livelihoods.

The association urged government authorities to adopt practical, lasting security strategies to prevent further escalation and avert a looming disaster. Dr. Osundara extended condolences to bereaved families, praying for peace.
