IRAN-ISREAL WAR: U.S. Strikes On Iran Increase Risk Of Wider War – UN Chief
UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned the Security Council on Sunday that the large-scale overnight attacks by the United States on Iran’s nuclear sites could significantly heighten the threat of a broader conflict.
Speaking during an emergency session convened to address threats to global peace and security, Guterres stated that the strikes had inflicted “serious damage to the international order.”
The situation follows ten consecutive days of airstrikes initiated by Israeli targeting Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, which have sparked deadly daily missile exchanges between Tehran and Tel Aviv.
The UN chief emphasized that the time had come for diplomacy to take the lead, cautioning, “We now risk plunging into an endless cycle of retaliation.”
“We must act, immediately and decisively, to halt the fighting and return to serious, sustained negotiations on the Iran nuclear programme.”
He further stressed that Israel, the U.S., and Iran were at a critical crossroads, underscoring the urgent need for diplomatic solutions to prevail.
“One path leads to a wider war, deeper human suffering and serious damage to the international order.
“The other leads to de-escalation, diplomacy and dialogue,” he said.
