JUST IN: PDP NWC Confirms Anyanwu As National Secretary
The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially reaffirmed Samuel Anyanwu as the party’s National Secretary, bringing an end to prolonged internal disputes and leadership ambiguity.
During a press briefing on Wednesday, PDP Acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, announced that Anyanwu would resume his duties, emphasizing that the decision underscores the NWC’s dedication to party cohesion and adherence to the rule of law.
Anyanwu, a former senator for Imo East, was elected National Secretary at the party’s 2021 National Convention.
However, his emergence as a gubernatorial candidate in Imo State sparked controversy, with some party members arguing that his candidacy effectively nullified his position as National Secretary, as the PDP constitution prohibits simultaneous holding of party office and pursuit of elective office.
Following his defeat to APC’s incumbent Governor Hope Uzodinma in the 2023 Imo governorship election, Anyanwu’s supporters advocated for his reinstatement. After weeks of internal deliberations and legal scrutiny, the NWC has now restored him to the role.
The move is viewed as a strategic effort to restore stability within the PDP’s leadership ahead of upcoming political contests, including the 2027 general elections, and as part of broader reconciliation efforts aimed at uniting the party as Nigeria’s main opposition.
