JUST IN: EFCC Grants Tambuwal, Withholds Passport
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has released former Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, on bail after questioning him over alleged fraudulent cash withdrawals amounting to N189bn.
Tambuwal, who led Sokoto State from 2015 to 2023, honoured an invitation to the EFCC headquarters in Abuja on Monday, arriving around 11:30 a.m.
He was grilled by investigators and later detained at the commission’s corporate headquarters.
According to EFCC insiders, the withdrawals are suspected to violate the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.
“Former Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, is being held over alleged fraudulent cash withdrawals to the tune of N189bn. The withdrawals are in flagrant violation of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022,” one source had said on Monday.
Another official, speaking anonymously, confirmed that Tambuwal remained in custody while investigations were ongoing.
By Tuesday, sources revealed he had been freed after meeting his bail conditions, described as “not stringent,” though his passport remains in EFCC custody.
“He has been released on administrative bail. He met all the bail conditions. His passport is with us,” a source stated.
Attempts to reach EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, were unsuccessful, as calls went unanswered and messages sent to him had yet to receive a reply at press time.
