Reps Vows To Stop Recurring Of Strikes In Varsities

The House of Representatives Committee on University Education has expressed its commitment to resolving the recurring strikes in Nigerian universities.

During a meeting in Abuja, the committee’s chairman, Abubakar Fulata, announced that they have expanded from two to six committees to ensure effective oversight of educational quality.

“This kind of meeting is necessary considering the fact that it is a new government, new Assembly, new committee and new committee’s leadership,” he said.

The committee aims to enhance the quality, accessibility, and rewarding nature of university education.

Fulata emphasized that addressing these challenges requires collective effort, including the intervention of the committee and contributions from all concerned citizens.

“It is unfortunate that university education today is facing serious challenges spanning form strike actions, cultism, insecurity, drugs peddling and immoral acts,’’ he said.

The acting Executive Secretary of the National University Commission, Prof. Chris Maiyaki, acknowledged the numerous challenges faced by Nigerian universities but expressed optimism that the National Assembly’s dedication would help mitigate some of these issues.

Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, speaking on behalf of the vice-chancellors, highlighted the potential for Nigerian universities to become the leading institutions in Africa.
