UN Security Council Honors Memory Of President Raisi With A Moment Of Silence
Members of the UN Security Council, including the United States, held a moment of silence to honor Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and his entourage who tragically lost their lives in a helicopter crash.
The initiative was led by Pedro Comissario Afonso, the UN ambassador for Mozambique, representing the rotating Council presidency for May.
He requested all members to stand in tribute to the deceased Iranian President and his team.
However, not all responses were positive, with Israel’s UN envoy Gilad Erdan criticizing the gesture as a “disgrace” and expressing concern over the Security Council’s effectiveness in promoting global peace and security.
“You saw correctly. The UN Security Council dedicated a moment of silence in memory of the mass murdering president of Iran, Raisi. What a disgrace,” he said in a video message posted on X.
“The Security Council has become a threat to global peace and security,” added Erdan.
Erdan’s comments come in the backdrop of increased tensions following an attack on Israel by Hamas on October 7th.
