BREAKING: Brazil Announces Three-day Mourning After Plane Crash In Country
A tragic incident unfolded on Friday in Brazil’s Sao Paulo state when an ATR 72-500 aircraft operated by Voepass airline crashed while en route from Cascavel to Sao Paulo’s Guarulhos international airport.
The plane, carrying 57 passengers and four crew members, tragically resulted in the loss of all lives on board.
Initially reporting 58 passengers on board, Voepass later revised the figure to 57.
Distressing images captured the plane spiraling down vertically, followed by a plume of smoke at the crash site in Vinhedo, a city in Brazil.
“There were no survivors,” the city government in Valinhos — which was involved in the rescue and recovery operation in nearby Vinhedo — said to AFP.
Approximately 80 kilometers northwest of Sao Paulo, Vinhedo, with its 76,000 residents, grappled with the aftermath of the crash.
Recovery of the victims’ remains for “identification” has begun and “will continue throughout the night,” Sao Paulo State Governor Tarcisio de Freitas told reporters at the scene.
In response to this tragedy, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva declared three days of mourning as the nation comes to terms with the loss.
Voepass pledged full cooperation with authorities to investigate the accident’s causes and provide support to the families of the victims on flight 2283.
CENIPA, Brazil’s aviation accident agency, has initiated an investigation into the incident, with support from experts at ATR, the aircraft manufacturer.
ATR, a Franco-Italian company and subsidiary of Airbus, is actively assisting the investigative process.
