Hope for Nnamdi Kanu’s Release Grows Amidst Calls for Political Intervention

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, says He remains optimistic about his potential release from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) by April 2025. This revelation comes from Engr. Ikenna Ellis-Ezenekwe, President-General of the Igbo Community Association (ICA) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), following his recent visit to Kanu at the DSS headquarters in Abuja.
Ellis-Ezenekwe reported that Kanu appeared to be in good health and maintained a strong spirit despite his prolonged detention. Confident in his legal team, Kanu expressed hope for a favorable court ruling. However, he also voiced concerns over the lack of strong leadership within the Igbo community and the worsening socio-political conditions affecting the Igbo people across Nigeria.
A key point in Kanu’s remarks was his criticism of how Igbo freedom fighters have been historically neglected. He referenced the abandonment of Ralph Uwazurike during his imprisonment, warning that such disregard weakens the cause for self-determination. Reaffirming his long-standing demand for a referendum, Kanu underscored the necessity of a democratic process to determine the future of the Igbo people.
In response, Ellis-Ezenekwe issued a public appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging him to exercise political will and facilitate Kanu’s release. He emphasized that continued detention could be interpreted as a tool of political suppression rather than a pursuit of justice.
Reflecting on his visit, Ellis-Ezenekwe highlighted Kanu’s resilience, discipline in adhering to his medical regimen, and unwavering commitment to his cause. He concluded by calling on the Nigerian government to uphold democratic values and recognize the need for dialogue in addressing the concerns of the Igbo people.
As the legal battle continues, the demand for Kanu’s release is gaining momentum, with supporters emphasizing the broader implications for justice, human rights, and Nigeria’s political stability.
