A’Ibom Varsity Lecturers Embark On Strike Over Unresolved Salary Issues 

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU) chapter, has embarked on an indefinite strike over unresolved issues concerning salaries, allowances, and the implementation of the N80,000 minimum wage.

Dr. Frank Namso, the chapter chairman, announced the decision during a press briefing held on Tuesday at the university’s Obio Akpa Campus.

He explained that the union had made several attempts to engage the university management and the Akwa Ibom State Government in resolving the issues, but all efforts proved futile.

According to him, the move is in line with “the resolution of ASUU at the recently concluded national delegates conference, which mandated any of its branches to embark on industrial action if their salaries are not paid by the 3rd of a new month.”

Following a unanimous decision by the union’s congress, the strike officially began at midnight on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, and will continue until the demands are addressed.

The key issues prompting the strike include the non-payment of Domestic Servant and Drivers’ Allowances, failure to implement the N80,000 minimum wage and settle outstanding arrears, and inadequate allocation for peculiar allowances.

Other grievances listed are the questionable payment of only N2,000 for hazard allowance, non-implementation of the 35% and 25% wage awards, delayed national promotion payments, and lack of compensation for postgraduate lectures and supervision.

Dr. Namso further lamented that academic staff have been denied domestic staff and drivers’ allowances for 13 years—a benefit consistently enjoyed by their non-teaching counterparts. He described the situation as “disheartening” and in need of urgent redress.

He also pointed out that lecturers in other state-owned institutions including Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Akwa Ibom State College of Education, and Akwa Ibom State College of Arts and Science, Nung Ukim, have been receiving these allowances for over a decade, underscoring the disparity.
