June 12: Protesters Seek Protection from Lagos Police Amid Democracy Day Rally

As Nigeria prepares to commemorate Democracy Day on June 12, the Take It Back Movement has formally appealed to the Lagos State Police Command for protection during their planned protest. Adekunle Taofeek, the TIB Coordinator in Lagos, addressed an open letter to the Lagos Commissioner of Police, Moshood Jimoh, requesting that the police ensure the safety and security of protesters.
The Tuesday letter explicitly outlines the purpose of the protest: to voice discontent over the pervasive insecurity and economic difficulties facing the nation. Adekunle stated, “On June 12, 2025, the people of Nigeria will take to the streets in peaceful protest against the unbearable insecurity and economic hardship that have strangled this nation.” The organizers emphasize that June 12 is a day of action, not silence, reflecting Nigerians’ enduring fight for their rights and freedoms.
The movement asserts that protesting is a fundamental right guaranteed by the Constitution, referencing sections 39 and 40 of the 1999 Constitution, which protect freedom of expression and peaceful assembly. They insist that the police are not empowered to suppress or criminalize peaceful dissent. The letter demands that the Lagos State Police Command avoid any attempts to suppress, brutalize, or arrest peaceful protesters, and instead, deploy officers to protect them, ensuring that their conduct remains professional and restrained.
June 12 holds historical importance as it marks the anniversary of the 1993 presidential election, which was annulled by the military regime led by Ibrahim Babangida. This year’s Democracy Day also celebrates 26 years of democratic governance since the transition from military rule in 1999, highlighting the progress and ongoing challenges in Nigeria’s democratic journey.
