In 2012, the leadership of Boko Haram, also known as Jama’atul Ahlis Sunnah Lidda’awati Wal Jihad, chose Muhammadu Buhari, then-presidential candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), and five other prominent northerners to mediate between the party and the Nigerian government.

Dr. Shettima Ali Monguno, Senator Bukar Abba Ibrahim, Ambassador Gaji Galtimari, Mrs Aisha Alkali Wakil, popularly known as Mama Boko Haram, and her husband Alkali Wakil were also suggested as mediators.
Abu Mohammed Ibn Abdulaziz, said to be the next-in-command to Boko Haram’s chief, Abubakar Shekau, has been appointed as the leader of the group’s delegation to the talks.
Abu Abbas, Sheik Ibrahim Yusuf, Sheik Sani, Kantagora, and the detained Mamman Nur were to accompany him.
Ibn Abdulaziz also demanded the arrest of former Governor Ali Modu Sheriff in a teleconference with reporters in Maiduguri, Borno state, but gave no explanation for his demand.

He also demanded compensation for the families of those killed by Boko Haram, as well as the release of those detained.
“We are not actually challenging the state, as some people believe,” Ibn Abdulaziz said, “but the security (forces) who are killing our members, children, and wives.”
“We are deeply insulted, but if this government is serious, all (the attacks) will cease.
We want to speak, but the government must be sincere in its approach to the situation.”
In the last 12 years, Boko Haram and its offshoot, Islamic State West Africa Province, have killed thousands of people and displaced millions in northeastern Nigeria.
The Nigerian military has consistently asserted that the insurgency has been largely defeated, thus downplaying any casualties.

Soldiers have been killed by rebels in recent months. Since 2009, tens of thousands of soldiers and officers have reportedly been killed. Insurgents also killed about 20 soldiers in Malari, Borno State, in February 2020.
The soldiers were on patrol following credible intelligence to clear some Boko Haram elements in the region when they were ambushed by the group, according to SaharaReporters.
