FG Commences New Employment Scheme For Artisans January 2022

The National Directorate of Employment (NDE) said that arrangements to launch a new artisan employment scheme in early January 2022 had been completed.

The Artisans in Collaborative Construction Employment Scheme (ACCES) is a new program aimed at creating a pool of talented, competent, and employable construction workers.

According to NDE Deputy Director, Information and Public Relations, Mr Edmund Onwuliri, in a statement made available to journalists in Abuja, the scheme will be anchored by the Directorate’s Special Public Works Department, with an effective take-off date of January 10, 2022 in 13 states of the federation.

“In order to ensure that participants imbibe the standards of the various professions in the construction industry, the program was primarily designed as a collaborative initiative between the NDE and other relevant stakeholders and organizations in the construction sector, such as domestic and multinational construction outfits and professional bodies in the construction space.”

“The scheme also aims to provide appropriate certification to artisans under relevant professional bodies, as well as imparting industry-led competency skills.”

“The scheme is expected to provide a more reliable and dependable pool of skilled workers for Nigeria’s construction industry, as well as provide an avenue for artisans to improve and upgrade their skills.”

“Furthermore, ACCES is expected to provide a platform for artisans to be organized for regular and sustainable work, as well as instilling in them a spirit of professionalism and increasing public trust.”  

“The initial intake into the scheme will be graduates of the NDE’s various construction-related schemes, such as the Environmental Beautification Scheme (EBTS), Basic Open Apprenticeship Scheme (B-NOAS), Advanced Open Apprenticeship Scheme (A-NOAS), as well as other artisans from across the benefiting states.”  

“The NDE has also worked out modalities that will ensure that regulatory bodies such as the National Business and Technical Education Board (NABTEB), Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB), Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Nigerian Institute of Estate Surveyors and Valuers (NIESV), Nigeria Institute of Architects (NIA), and others will provide the necessary guidance towards the artisans’ certification over time.”

“Artisans hired under the scheme will also go through documentation and an orientation period before being assigned to construction firms for hands-on training and experience. Imo, Lagos, Kano, Borno, Oyo, Nasarawa, and Adamawa will benefit from the scheme when it launches in January 2022. Sokoto, Enugu, Yobe, Niger, Taraba, and Delta State are among the others, the statement read.
