AFCON 2023 : Six Guinea Fans Die While Celebrating Victory
During the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations, six fans lost their lives in Guinea while celebrating their country’s first win in Ivory Coast.
The Guinean Football Federation, Feguifoot confirmed the incident occurred as fans took to the streets of Conakry, the capital of Guinea, to celebrate by driving cars and motorcycles.
Guinea emerged victorious with a 1-0 win against The Gambia in their second group game.
The celebrations were lively, with supporters and the public joining in the jubilation.
While speaking to BBC Africa Sport, Feguifoot media manager, Amadou Makadji, said their supporters and the public celebrated in a lively manner.
“What is important is that our fans and the public celebrate in a very measured fashion.
“They have to be very careful not to put themselves in danger, because football aims to bring joy and not leave families bereaved. We do not want deaths to mourn, so we call on everyone to celebrate but to take care of themselves so that nothing happens to them.
“Guinea is a country where people are very, very passionate about football and they experience football like nowhere else in the world,” he said.
According to a police source, three individuals died in a collision between two vehicles that were traveling at high speed.
Additionally, several dozen others were injured in various road accidents.
The celebrations involved fans driving on car bonnets, leading to roads in the capital becoming congested.
