AFCON 2023: Ojougboh, Others Die Watching Nigeria, S’Africa Match
During the semi-final match between the Super Eagles of Nigeria and Bafana Bafana of South Africa in the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) held in Cote D’Ivoire, at least five Nigerians lost their lives.
The high-stakes game, which ended in a penalty shootout victory for the Super Eagles, was filled with tension.
Among the reported casualties were Dr. Cairo Ojougboh, a prominent member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and a former member of the House of Representatives.
He collapsed while watching the match in his home in Abuja, Nigeria.
Another tragic incident occurred when a young corps member named Samuel, who was serving in Adamawa State, passed away during the penalty shootout.
Additionally, Ayuba Abdullahi, the Deputy Bursar of Kwara State University, lost his life while watching the match at a viewing center in the Sango area of Kwara state.
Mikail Osundiji, a resident of Olomoore area in Abeokuta, Ogun State, was also among those who sadly lost their lives while watching the match.
Furthermore, an Anambra-born businessman named Osondu Nwoye, who was living in Cote d’Ivoire, reportedly collapsed inside the stadium and later passed away in a hospital.
These heartbreaking incidents serve as a reminder of the intense emotions and passions that sporting events can evoke, even leading to tragic consequences.
