Burna Boy Didn’t Steal From American Music – Steve Harvey Refutes Claim
American television host and filmmaker, Steve Harvey, has stated that, contrary to Western beliefs, Burna Boy and other African artists have not taken from American music.
Instead, Harvey emphasized that it is the West, particularly America, that draws inspiration from African beats, rhythm, and soul.
“People claim Burna Boy stole this, no we stole from Burna Boy. Africans are the beats, soul, rhythm, and hard work that inspire our courage,” the comedian said in a recent episode of his television show.
According to reports, in an interview with Apple Music last year, Burna Boy clarified that he does not create the popular West African music genre, Afrobeats, but rather a fusion called Afrofusion.
This genre combines elements of American hip-hop, R&B, soul, Jamaican reggae and dancehall, and African music.
Being nominated in the Best Melodic Rap Performance category at the 66th Grammys marked a historic moment for Burna Boy as the first African artist to receive a nomination in a category previously dominated by Western artists.
Despite not winning the award, with Lil Durk taking the prize, there were allegations in certain Western circles that Burna Boy was attempting to appropriate Western musical styles.
