NFF Named Austin Eguavoen As Super Eagles Interim Manager
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has named Augustine Eguavoen as the interim coach of the national team. This marks Eguavoen’s fourth stint as the team’s manager.
Eguavoen’s appointment follows the resignation of former coach Jose Peseiro due to his contract expiring within the last 24 hours.
Back in June 2005, Eguavoen was appointed as the caretaker coach of the Nigeria national team alongside his coaching staff, which included Samson Siasia, Daniel Amokachi, and Ike Shorunmu.
During his tenure, he led the national team to a bronze medal victory at the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, defeating Senegal in the third-place playoff. However, he was relieved of his duties in April 2006.
In June 2010, the Nigeria Football Federation requested Eguavoen to step in for Swedish coach Lars Lagerback until the latter made his future plans clear.
Despite being brought in as a caretaker manager, Eguavoen stated that he had no intentions of applying for the role permanently.
Eguavoen also held the position of head coach for the Nigeria national under-23 football team starting in August 2010.
Although he aimed to lead his team to qualify for the 2012 London Olympic Games, they were eliminated in the group stage.
Subsequently, on December 5, 2011, Eguavoen resigned from his post due to the team’s failure to secure an Olympic qualification.
In December 12, 2021, Eguavoen was once again appointed as the interim manager of Nigeria for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, succeeding Gernot Rohr.
Following Nigeria’s elimination in the round of sixteen with a heartbreaking loss to Tunisia, he resumed his role as the Technical Director of the team.
